France’s Truck Guards End Strike
PARIS — A two-week strike by armored-truck guards in France that left Paris’ automated teller machines empty and people scrambling to find cash came to an end Tuesday.
The guards had gone on strike after several holdups that left colleagues dead. On Tuesday, they agreed to accept a “risk premium” of $138 a month--less than the $208 they sought but far more than the initial offer. The deal also includes a pay increase ranging from 1.5% to 5% over two years.
Unions expressed concern over some portions of the agreement, but they also said they were happy to end a walkout that had inconvenienced people.
Armored-truck guards deliver cash to refill bank ATMs, and during the strike, more than 60% of the machines in Paris emptied out.
