SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
Seniors from seven South County cities stepped out Saturday at the Community Center to combat stereotypes of the elderly and raise scholarship money.
“The annual Step-Out is to show the other generations that seniors are still active and not just sitting on their butts,†said Alie Bishop, president of the San Juan senior club.
The statewide event drew thousands of seniors, their families and friends this year, according to the California Parks and Recreation Society.
South County senior centers take turns hosting a regional Step-Out event every year, said Elaine Tracy, senior citizen program coordinator for San Juan Capistrano. About 700 seniors participated this year, raising about $2,000 for a scholarship fund for students majoring in gerontology.
