Top-seeded Chapman suffered its first loss in the NCAA Division III softball tournament, falling, 4-3, to St. Mary’s (Minn.) at Salem, Va., Saturday.
The Panthers (38-10) play Alma (Mich.) today at 9 a.m. with the winner facing St. Mary’s in a championship game at noon. A St. Mary’s loss in that game would force a second title game Monday.
Teisha Smith pitched her third complete game of the tournament for St. Mary’s (39-6). Chapman’s Linsey Buendia (16-5) gave up seven hits and three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings.
Trailing, 3-0, the Panthers scored twice in the top of the sixth, but the Cardinals scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
Chapman’s Dawn Lopez had a single and two RBIs.
