UC Irvine’s Sampson Wins Big West Long Jump Title

Anita Sampson’s victory in the long jump was the highlight for local athletes competing in the Big West Conference track and field championships at Moscow, Idaho.
With an 18-10 1/2 leap on the day’s final attempt, Sampson, a UC Irvine junior, became the first Anteater to win a Big West women’s long-jump title.
Nevada (97 points) leads the women’s standings, Long Beach (25) is third and UCI (20) fifth. The Titans’ Carla Battle qualified in the 100 meters (11.98 seconds) and the 200 (24.57). Teammate Genia Daniels (11.98) also qualified in the 100.
Utah State (83.5) is the men’s leader, with Cal State Fullerton (19.5), Long Beach State (18.5) and UC Irvine (5.5) bringing up the rear. The Titans’ Damion Jackson (14.49) qualified in the 110 high hurdles, while teammates Paul Ruvolo (6 feet 11 inches) was second in the high jump and Brandon Campbell (23-9) finished third in the long jump.
