Chapman Rolls to 9-0 Softball Victory
Tiffany Hoskins pitched a one-hitter and Dawn Lopez hit a two-run home run as Chapman routed Tufts, 9-0, in a six-inning first-round game of the NCAA Division III softball championships in Salem, Va.
The top-seeded Panthers (37-9) scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to break a scoreless tie. Six of the runs were unearned and the inning ended only when Chapman hit into a bases-loaded triple play.
Cindy Bemis had a two-run single during the rally.
Lopez’s home run came two innings later and ended the game because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Hoskins (18-3) finished with seven strikeouts and Lopez had three hits, two RBIs and scored two runs. Heather Peters had two hits and scored two runs for the Panthers, who play Roanoke College, a 4-0 winner over Alma College, in the second round at 2:30 p.m. today.
