Populist Is Winner of Presidential Race

Left-leaning populist Hipolito Mejia was declared the winner of the Dominican presidential race after his opponents withdrew from a runoff election. With only 18 of 11,422 polling stations uncounted, officials said Mejia, 59, of the center-left Dominican Revolutionary Party, had 49.86% of the vote. Free-market advocate Danilo Medina had 24.95%. Conservative 93-year-old Joaquin Balaguer won 24.61%.
