Children Get a Taste of Classical Music

VENTURA — Hundreds of elementary school children packed into the Ventura Theater on Wednesday for to hear something unusual for them--a classical music concert.
The performance was one of several for children, 2,000 of whom are expected to participate across Ventura County. The concerts offer a sample of the Ventura Chamber Music Festival, which will run through Sunday.
The festival is in its sixth year. And with each presentation, organizers take time to familiarize third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students with some of the music. Most of the children are more accustomed listening to Britney Spears and ‘N Sync, but trombone player Rob Frear said that’s the point.
“If they’re never exposed to this kind of live music, how will they ever catch the fire?” Frear said.
