ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A police officer from the western Alaska village of Akiachak died over the weekend when his snowmobile fell through river ice, Alaska state troopers said Monday.
Richard Alexie, 29, was riding a machine on the Kuskokwim River with fellow officer Roland Noes on Saturday afternoon when they broke through the ice. Noes was able to climb out of the water but Alexie was not, officials said.
It was the 25th snowmobile fatality in Alaska since October, the troopers said.
