The St. Louis Blues appear well on theri way to finishing with the NHL’s best regular-season record. But last season marked the first in five that the team with the best regular-season record also managed to win the Stanley Cup.
Breaking down the past five seasons:
1998-99 Dallas was 51-19-12; Dallas won the cup.
1997-98 Dallas was 49-22-11; Detroit (44-23-15) won the cup.
1996-97 Colorado was 49-24-9; Detroit (38-26-10) won the cup.
1995-96 Detroit was 62-13-7; Colorado (47-25-10) won the cup.
1994-95 Detroit was 33-11-4; New Jersey (22-18-8) won the cup.
