* IBM Corp. will unveil computer chips for television set-top boxes that let viewers scan the Web as satellite and cable companies add more services. IBM’s three chips will let TVs display program guides and allow viewers to check bank balances. The chips, to be used by companies such as Samsung Group, will be available in July. By 2003, more devices such as set-top boxes, cell phones and hand-held computers than PCs will have an Internet connection, IBM said.

* Orckit Communications Inc., an Israeli phone-equipment maker, will announce today that it has agreed to buy custom chip maker Silicon Value Ltd. for about $138.5 million in stock to beef up the semiconductor unit it will spin off later this year. Orckit will pay 2 million shares for closely held Silicon Value, which designs and sells customized chips to network equipment companies such as Lucent Technologies Inc. and 3Com Corp. Tel Aviv-based Orckit makes modems and other gear used in digital subscriber line services that deliver high-speed Net access over phone lines.
