Veteran Police Officer Dies in Helicopter Crash

WEST COVINA — A veteran West Covina police officer died Friday in a helicopter training accident near Rialto Airport.
Investigators said Charles Chiles, 50, a resident of Duarte and a 14-year veteran of the West Covina Police Department, was killed when the helicopter he was piloting bounced off the ground, climbed briefly back into the air and then crashed. Officials said Chiles had been training to get his helicopter pilot’s license.
