AREA HIGH SCHOOL NOTEBOOK

An intriguing game, complete with one of the strongest pitching matchups of the season, takes place Friday at Palmdale.

Right-hander Matt Parris of Highland, who has signed with UC Santa Barbara, and right-hander Matt Harrington of Palmdale, one of the top prospects in the nation, will pitch in a Golden League opener.

“Kicking off the first game with the two favorites is pretty exciting, but we play a 15-game league schedule,” said Coach Mike Van Cheri of Highland. “You don’t want to put too much weight on the first game.”

Highland won the Golden League last season, Palmdale won it two years ago.
