N. Hollywood Man, 55, Collapses, Dies During Hike With Family

LA TUNA CANYON — A North Hollywood man collapsed and died during a Sunday hike with his family in La Tuna Canyon, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.
Neither the cause of death nor the man’s identity were immediately known, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.
The 55-year-old and his family had been hiking in the rugged canyon for about two hours when he collapsed about 2 p.m., Humphrey said.
A caller using a cell phone notified authorities, and about 25 firefighters and two city fire helicopters responded, Humphrey said. They found the man’s body on the trail.
La Tuna Canyon is a favorite among weekend hikers but has its dangers, Humphrey said.
“Our lush hillsides have a magnetic draw to weekend hikers,” Humphrey said.
“This proves the value of hiking with a group, having a cell phone and getting a full medical evaluation before heading out into the outdoors.
