Flight Attendants May Clip US Airways’ Wings

The union representing US Airways flight attendants released a list of 49 flight routes that members are threatening to strike at random if the company does not agree to pay raises and other contract demands. The Assn. of Flight Attendants said it was releasing the list before the planned March 25 strike action so customers would have time to book flights on other airlines. But US Airways officials said that even if the union says where job actions might be staged, the airline would shut down rather than endure a walkout. The routes include several flights in and out of Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Atlanta and Baltimore, among others. Included on the list were flights between Los Angeles and Baltimore, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, and San Francisco and Baltimore. The strikes could occur all at once or at random each day, according to the union, which calls the plan CHAOS, or Create Havoc Around Our System. Negotiations are scheduled to resume next Friday under the auspices of the National Mediation Board, which oversees labor talks in the transportation industry. About 10,000 US Airways flight attendants are working under a contract that expired at the end of 1996.
