Religious Violence in North Spurs Curfew

Experiencing Nigeria’s worst cycle of ethnic and religious violence in 30 years, authorities in the northwestern state of Sokoto were forced to order a curfew. Meanwhile, in Lagos, the country’s main city, members of the locally dominant Yoruba ethnic group clashed with northern Hausa Muslims after a truck driven by a Hausa lost control and crashed into a crowd, killing 20 people. But an outbreak of religious violence Tuesday in Sokoto appeared to be the more worrisome. Police said Muslim students rampaged, demanding the immediate adoption of Islamic law, or Sharia.
