Ex-Communist Chief’s Arrest Is Said to End

Beijing has decided to end the confinement of disgraced Communist leader Zhao Ziyang, a Hong Kong newspaper reported. The paper quoted sources as saying police were no longer standing guard outside Zhao’s house. Zhao has been under house arrest since June 1989. A former premier and Communist Party chief, Zhao fell from grace after sympathizing with protesting students who occupied Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. The protest was crushed by the army June 4, 1989.
