Al Gore
* There’s one sure-fire way for the Democrats to win the presidential race in November, and that would be for Bill Clinton to resign immediately and let Al Gore finish his term. Such a boost would erase the taint in the minds of voters disgusted by Clinton’s personal faults, help separate Gore as his own thinker and prove he’s more worthy of the office than George W. Bush is.
If Clinton cares about his country, his party and his legacy, he should resign at once.

Re “Bush Looking in Father’s Cabinet,” July 24: Why is it that Bush’s independence from his father is such an issue, when the bigger question is Gore’s independence from Clinton? Scandal-plagued Clinton has much to lose by a Bush presidency, such as losing control over the Justice Department, and thus has used every political contrivance and resource of his office to elect Gore. In contrast, the elder George Bush, reputation intact, has no real interest in electing his son, other than fatherly pride.

The decision-making skills of the Sierra Club seem to be in decline. Its endorsement of Gore makes no sense in light of the Clinton/Gore environmental legacy (July 24). Clinton and Gore have been the main proponents of anti-labor, anti-environment, anti-democracy NAFTA, GATT and WTO treaties.
As for abiding by agreements to reduce “greenhouse gases,” the Clinton-Gore administration has produced only hot air and interminable stalling. The administration presided over the biggest federal land giveaway in history to oil companies for exploration in Alaska. Gore is a major stockholder in Occidental Petroleum.
