All-American Jung Will Transfer

Lovieanne Jung, an All-American second baseman the last two seasons for Fresno State’s softball team, said she is planning to transfer.

“I decided it wasn’t the right situation for me [at Fresno State],” Jung said. She declined to elaborate.

Men’s crew--Dave Grant will return to Orange Coast College as head coach of the men’s crew team next season. He was misidentified in Tuesday’s edition.

Jung said she is considering Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State or Arizona. She said she has no timetable for a decision.

Jung apparently will have to sit out next season because Fresno State has not given her a release that would make her eligible immediately elsewhere.

“That’s not a problem for me,” Jung said. “I wasn’t expecting to get the release, and I probably won’t enroll wherever I go until spring,” she said.

Jung, who played at Fountain Valley High as a senior after three years at Ocean View, was an All-Western Athletic Conference first-team selection and a third-team All-American for the second consecutive season.

SHAW MAKES COMEBACK

Dave Shaw, former president of Orange Coast College, will be back at the school as head coach of the men’s crew team next season.

Shaw, 62, said he will fill in for Jim Jorgensen, who is taking a leave of absence to earn his captain’s license.

Shaw coached the team from 1963 through 1996, including the time when he was the school’s president from 1989 through 1996. He retired as president in 1996. Jorgensen coached the OCC freshman crew team last season.

UCI RECRUITS SET

Four county players joined six other soccer players in signing with the UC Irvine men’s team recently, Coach George Kuntz said.

Joining the Anteaters from Orange County high schools are Dardo Acuna, a midfielder from Loara High; Sebastian Galmarini, a forward from Santa Margarita, Jonathan Nebot, a forward from Laguna Niguel; and Cameron Rossi, a goalkeeper from El Toro.

Others who signed were Robby Busick, a defender and midfielder from Atascadero High; Travis Cutler, a defender from Arcadia; Roger Davenger, a forward from Norway; Chris Ruiz, a defender from Long Beach Poly; Lerato Simelane, a forward from North Hollywood Harvard Westlake who is originally from South Africa; and Dave Yemane, a midfielder from San Diego Mission Bay who was raised in Ethiopia.

CHAPMAN COACH HOPEFUL

Chapman baseball Coach Rex Peters believes the Panthers will challenge for a fifth consecutive appearance in a Division III regional in 2001. And perhaps this time it will be as a host team.

Chapman, an independent, has not been able to host a regional because it does not have a suitable facility, Peters said. Chapman plays its home games at Hart Park in Orange.

Peters said a potential deal to host a four-team regional at Cal State Fullerton in 1999 fell through, and the Panthers decided not to make a bid to host the 2000 tournament, which was held at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Tex.
