A 16-year-old boy who tried to steal a 12-pack of beer with his friend was shot Wednesday by a liquor store employee, police said.

The boy, who was wounded in the shoulder, was taken to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was in good condition.

The shooting occurred shortly after 11 a.m. in the 15400 block of Chatsworth Street. The two boys walked into the store and allegedly attempted to run out the front door with the beer, Los Angeles Police Officer Guillermo Campos said

The clerk stopped the boys, who began hitting and pushing him. The store employee then grabbed a gun from behind the counter and fired one shot, hitting the 16-year-old, police said.

The clerk held the wounded boy at gunpoint and called police. The second boy escaped and was being sought by police.

Upon his release from the hospital, police said the wounded teenager will be taken to Juvenile Hall, where he will be held on suspicion of robbery.
