Electric Cars

A July 6 letter claimed that electric cars generate more pollution by drawing power from the electric grid than gasoline cars do by burning gasoline. Charging an electric car from California’s power mix is 97% cleaner than operating an internal combustion vehicle. Furthermore, when emissions from refining, transportation and dispensing of gasoline are factored in, the electric cars come out about 99% cleaner. Should a driver choose to select a 100% renewable provider under California’s deregulated power system, he or she can drive a car with absolutely no emissions at all. Electric vehicles are inherently much, much cleaner than gasoline-powered ones.

* People writing on the issue of providing power for electric vehicles seem to be missing the point that it is much easier to regulate emissions and manage fuel efficiency at a few fixed generating plants than it is for millions of mobile vehicles.
