Felons’ Rights
Re “Does 1st Amendment Give Felons a Right to Cash In?” July 4:
What’s the problem in restricting the rights of convicted murderers and other felons? The moment we put them behind bars we restrict their inalienable rights of liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And when we execute them we deny them their inalienable right to life. As we should. And as they deserve.
It is perfectly consistent to restrict their freedom of speech as well. They forfeit those rights when they commit crimes.

* I believe convicts have the 1st Amendment right to express themselves through writing, art, whatever. However, in my recollection of that amendment, there is no guarantee of any right to reap profit from the exercise of free speech. The “Son of Sam” laws are valid, reasonable and should be upheld.
