A former superintendent for an Orange County school district has been selected by the Pasadena school board to be its interim superintendent.

Edgar Seal, superintendent for Brea Olinda School District from 1982 to 1994, will begin July 17 if the board approves his contract Tuesday.

In recent years, Seal has worked as a consultant for Los Angeles Unified School District. He devised a program to train principals at 30 of its lowest-performing schools on implementing a phonics-based reading and language program.

He served as interim superintendent for the Chino Valley Unified School District from December 1996 to November 1997.

Seal, a Chino Hills resident, is expected to head the 24,000-student Pasadena Unified School District for six to 12 months. The school board is conducting a nationwide search for a permanent replacement for retiring Supt. Vera Vignes.
