Football has steadily grown in popularity across Mexico in recent years--so much so that the 106,000-seat Azteca stadium, a famed soccer mecca, has been filled to capacity for the past three years for NFL preseason exhibition games.
David Faitelson, a prominent commentator for TV Azteca which is broadcasting the final, said he expects 20 million Mexican fans will tune in this evening.
“Unfortunately, this year the favorite teams of Mexicans, the Cowboys, the Steelers and the 49ers, are not playing,†Faitelson said, or the audience would have been even bigger.
