Pacifica Dominates Santiago
Pacifica used a full-court press that forced Santiago into numerous mistakes and helped the Mariners to a 67-47 victory in a key Garden Grove League girls’ basketball game Monday at Santiago.
Lindsay Skeber led Pacifica with 18 points and Dominique Valencia added 15. The Mariners (13-7, 7-0 in league) also had 25 steals for the game, led by Diana Barreras’ nine.
Stephanie Reupena scored 11 points for Santiago (12-8, 5-2).
In another Garden Grove League game:
Garden Grove 52, La Quinta 25--Gloria Rojas scored 13 points, Erin Deane had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Alyssa Bradac scored eight points and blocked five shots to lead host Garden Grove (9-11, 5-2), which led 28-11 at halftime.
Jackie Nguyen led La Quinta (2-18, 0-7), with eight points as the Aztecs were held to single digit point totals in all four quarters.
In Garden Grove League boys’ basketball:
La Quinta 60, Garden Grove 59--Garden Grove’s Greg Benoit hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough for the Argonauts (2-4 in league).
Matt Blanchard made four three-pointers and scored 25 points for visiting La Quinta (7-14, 3-4). Blanchard also made six of seven free throws in the closing minutes, including two with five seconds remaining, which gave the Aztecs a four-point lead.
Pacifica 77, Santiago 46--Pacifica (11-9, 6-1) outscored Santiago, 30-13, in the fourth quarter. Joel Brock scored 20 points and Rey Santos added 17 for the Mariners. Tung Vo scored 15 points for Santiago before fouling out.
Rancho Alamitos 61, Los Amigos 59--Jimmy Nguyen made two free throws with five seconds left to win it for host Rancho Alamitos (9-11, 2-5).
Scott Frank led the Vaqueros with 16 points, including two three-pointers in the fourth quarter, and Duane Nix scored 13 points and Bryan Maxwell had nine points and eight rebounds.
In Garden Grove League boys’ soccer:
Santiago 3, Pacifica 1--Melvin Mejia, Edgar Astorga and Angel Rivera gave Santiago a 3-0 lead with second-half goals.
In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:
No. 9 Pacifica 11, Santiago 1--Diana DeAugustine scored three goals and Tami Fipps and Sandy Jimenez had two each for host Pacifica (15-3-1, 7-0).
