What some residents thought were vandals at the Headlands turned out to be geologists and authorized personnel.

Several residents called Dana Point City Hall to report people trespassing and what appeared to be people defacing the Headlands, according to a weekly report from the city manager’s office.

In recent weeks, geologists have run several tests on the 121-acre promontory. The work included taking soil samples and making 50-foot bores into the ground to study the effects of bluff erosion, said Kevin Darnall, vice president of Headlands Reserve LLC, the property’s owners.
