Bad things happen to basketball teams that score seven points in the second half. For Costa Mesa, it meant blowing a halftime lead and getting blown out by Corona del Mar, 64-31, in a Pacific Coast League girls’ basketball game Thursday.
The visiting Sea Kings (16-4, 4-0) trailed, 24-21, at the half, but outscored the Mustangs, 43-7, in the second half and 29-2 in the fourth quarter to take sole possession of first place.
Corona del Mar guard Charlene Quon finished with 18 points, making four three-pointers in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter.
A follow shot by Chris Eyre gave Corona del Mar a 29-28 lead with 4 minutes 18 seconds left in the third quarter.
Two Quon three-pointers put the Sea Kings up, 41-29, early in the fourth quarter. Several Mustang turnovers were followed by consecutive Quon three-pointers that made it 48-30.
Autumn Smith and Christine Caron each had seven points to lead the Mustangs (13-6, 3-1).
