A 27-year-old Santa Barbara man suffered serious head injuries Thursday when he was struck by a truck while walking across California 126, authorities said.
The unidentified man was listed in serious condition Thursday night at Ventura County Medical Center.
California Highway Patrol officers said they discovered the man crossing the westbound lanes near the Edwards Ranch Road overcrossing east of Ventura.
Before an officer could reach the man, he was struck by a semitruck and thrown several feet into the air, CHP Officer David Webb said.
Webb said he did not know how fast the truck was traveling. The driver, Charles Carlin, 31, of Oklahoma City, was not injured, authorities said.
Webb said there was no abandoned vehicle in the area.
“We’re still investigating the incident as to why he was there and if it was an accident or an attempted suicide,” Webb said.
