Cooke Spices Up Oxnard Offense

While freshman center Chris Massie and sophomore forward Tellys Knight get most of the attention on the Oxnard College men’s team, Coach Ron McClurkin gives point guard Eddie Cooke plenty of credit for the team’s success.
Cooke, a 6-foot sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., has been instrumental in helping Oxnard to a 13-6 record.
“He was a power forward in high school,” McClurkin said. “I moved him to point guard and he’s being recruited by four-year schools.”
Cooke is averaging 5.5 assists. He is among nine out-of-state players at Oxnard.
“His dad works with my older brother at the post office [in Charlotte],” McClurkin said.
McClurkin’s three-guard scheme includes Omar McCarter, son of Andre McCarter, former UCLA and NBA guard.
McCarter, a 6-3 sophomore from Philadelphia, is averaging 16.8 points.

Glendale continues to impress as the most improved WSC women’s team this season, primarily because of 5-7 guard Marilyn Dubon.
Dubon, a freshman from Belmont, leads the WSC in scoring at 23.8 points per game and is second in three-point baskets with 32.
The Vaqueros were 12-7, 1-0 in Southern Division play before playing at Citrus on Wednesday night. They finished 6-24, 1-11 last season. Glendale is averaging 65.5 points and scored 101 points in one game. The team last season averaged 45.5 points, never scoring more than 70 points in a game.
