Area’s Only 24-Hour Post Office to Relocate

WESTCHESTER — Southern California’s only 24-hour post office will go dark for 55 hours at the end of the week so postal workers can relocate it to a larger building, officials announced.

The Worldway Air Mail Center at 5800 W. Century Blvd. near Los Angeles International Airport will close at 11 p.m. Saturday and will reopen at 6 a.m. Tuesday three blocks away at 9029 Airport Blvd.

A pair of mobile post offices will be parked at the Century Boulevard site between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday and Monday, officials said. Post office box service will be available until 7 p.m. Monday.

The new site will be open round the clock and will be the first Los Angeles-area post office in which customers take a number to get service. While they are waiting for their number to be called, they will be encouraged to browse through a new retail postal store.

Relocation of the post office, which draws about 5,000 customers a day, will improve traffic flow on the main entryway to the airport, officials said. The new site will have 3,310 postal boxes, 720 more than at the current location, and 50% more parking spaces.
