Richard Henry Dana Elementary School and the Dana Point Historical Society will benefit from special funds earmarked by Mayor Ingrid McGuire.
The council last week unanimously approved McGuire’s decision to give the organizations her share of a $15,000 fund set aside in the city budget to help area nonprofit groups and for events that benefit the community.
The school will receive $1,500 to help students unearth part of a prehistoric whale fossil from the stone casing that has preserved it for 4 million to 5 million years.
The Historical Society can use its $1,500 grant for anything except the purchase of the Dolph House, the city’s first residence, because a zoning ordinance for the property prohibits the landmark from being bought with municipal funds.
