NAPLES, Fla. — He may have won 21 times on the PGA Tour, but Lanny Wadkins was admittedly nervous during his first round on the Senior PGA Tour on Friday.
Wadkins shot a seven-under-par 65 and is a stroke back after the first round of the ACE Group Classic.
Dana Quigley and Jim Thorpe shared the first-round lead, each shooting 64 on the Pelican Marsh course.
“I was probably a little bit more apprehensive, maybe a touch more excited than I would’ve been for a normal tournament,” Wadkins said. “I wanted to play well. I had a lot of preseason hype, so to speak. . . . I know I can play and I wanted to go out and prove to everybody that I still can.”
Tom Watson, playing his first full season on the senior tour, opened with a 69.
Bruce Summerhays opened with a 66, and Larry Nelson, John Jacobs and Walter Hall shot 67s. Defending champion Allen Doyle had a 69.
Arnold Palmer, 70, playing in Naples for the third consecutive year, opened with a 78.
