Bal’s Home Run Helps Northridge Get Split in Matador Invitational

Second-ranked Washington handed Cal State Northridge its first loss of the season with six timely extra-base hits Friday for a 9-5 victory in a pool-play game of the Matador Invitational.
In an earlier game against San Diego State, Ui Bal hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to give the Matadors a 3-1 victory.
Washington (5-0) scored five runs in the fourth inning on four hits, including two doubles and a triple, for an 8-2 lead.
Sara Farnworth Jill Passafiume each had two hits for Northridge (2-1-1).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Redlands 64, Cal Lutheran 61--Heather Dana hit a three-point shot with one second left to stop the Regals’ winning streak at 10 games in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Redlands.
Katie Carpenter had 16 points and six rebounds for Cal Lutheran (15-6, 8-1).
Redlands (11-10, 5-3) made 24 of 27 free throws, 17 of 17 in the first half.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Pepperdine 6, Missouri 5--Jeremy Coronado had two hits and scored twice for the Waves at Pepperdine.
Noah Lowry (1-0) pitched one inning of relief for the Waves (2-5), allowing one hit and striking out two.
Cal Lutheran 15, Claremont-Mudd 1--Jim Stout had three hits and four RBIs during a SCIAC game at Cal Lutheran.
Stout and Tom Galante hit three-run home runs for Cal Lutheran (3-0, 1-0).
L.A. City 8, Pierce 7--Jon Bringuier hit a three-run home run, but the Brahmas (2-2) lost a pool-play game of the Western State Conference tournament at Pierce.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
UC Irvine 8, CS Northridge 1--Marietta-Louise Shaw defeated Liz Yim, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6 singles for the Matadors’ point in a nonconference match at Irvine.
Darian Chappell from Camarillo High and Maureen Diaz from Glendale each won twice for the Anteaters.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Kennedy 0, Reseda 0--Mario Merino made five saves for Kennedy and the teams finished in a tie for the Valley Mission League title at Reseda.
Newbury Park 3, Thousand Oaks 1--Jon Krupansky scored two goals, Geoffrey Raives had nine saves and the Panthers (7-10-1, 4-7-1) won a Marmonte League League game at Thousand Oaks.
Royal 1, Simi Valley 0--Peter Bauman scored on a header in the 58th minute of a Marmonte League game at Royal.
Royal (18-7-3, 9-2-1) earned a share of the league title with Thousand Oaks.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Kennedy 5, Reseda 0--Courtney Diamond scored two goals for the the Cougars (13-2-2, 9-1), who clinched the Valley Mission League title at Kennedy.
Monroe 1, Sylmar 1--Alicia Vallecios of Sylmar scored with 10 minutes left in a Valley Mission League game at Sylmar.
Monroe (13-3-4, 8-1-1) fell out of a first-place tie with Kennedy.
La Reina 4, Carpinteria 0--Brenna Scanlon had two goals and Lindsey Free had two assists for the Regents (12-5-1, 8-2), who clinched the Tri-Valley League title at La Reina.
Canoga Park 1, Verdugo Hills 1--Luz Sanchez scored for Verdugo Hills and the teams tied for second in the Sunset Six League at Verdugo Hills.
Canoga Park finished 8-6-2, 6-3-1 and Verdugo Hills was 11-4-2, 6-3-1.
