Residents yearning for outdoor recreation can bike, walk and skate on miles of trails that wind through the city. And with only about two-thirds of the city’s trails complete, more trails are yet to come--some within the next year.

Last month, the city hired LFA Associates of Irvine to create a bicycle plan and map detailing which parts of the city’s trail system had yet to be built, said Katie Berg, the city’s associate transportation analyst.

“There are gaps that are left because a lot of the trails get built by developers,†she said.

The bicycle plan should be finished by fall, when city officials will use it to submit trail funding applications to the state, Berg said.

Besides homes, businesses, roads and parks, the city’s master plan designates an intricate web of riding and hiking trails, said Deanna Manning, director of community services. The trails are integrated with Orange County’s regional trail system, which, when complete, will running from the northern foothills to the Pacific Ocean.
