151 Police Officers Killed During 2000

A total of 151 police officers have died in the line of duty so far this year, an increase of 11% from 1999, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the Concerns of Police Survivors. The annual average in the 1990s was 153, compared with 187 during the 1980s and 222 during the 1970s. Texas had the most police officers killed this year, with 14 dead, followed by California with 11 and Georgia and Tennessee with 10 each.
