A 20-year-old Oxnard woman on her way to work in Camarillo was killed Thursday morning when her eastbound car slammed into an oncoming pickup truck on an open stretch of Hueneme Road.
Anabell Garcia, an employee at Harbor Freight Tools in Camarillo, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the 5:30 a.m. accident, said Chief Deputy Medical Examiner Craig Stevens.
The force of the crash sent the pickup truck careening into a ditch beside the road. Calvin Butler, 46, of Kirtland, N.M., the driver of the truck, sustained a fractured pelvis. One of his two passengers sustained a broken nose; the other was uninjured, California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Moriarty said.
Moriarty said the accident occurred just east of Wood Road between Camarillo and Port Hueneme when Garcia attempted to pass a slower-moving car.
Butler and his two passengers were wearing seat belts, but Garcia was not, Moriarty said.
“It didn’t appear that she was in a hurry,” Moriarty said. “She just pulled out at an inopportune time.”
Officials at the Camarillo tool warehouse where Garcia worked were instructed not to comment on the incident, said Andrea Jimenez, a spokeswoman for the company.
