Coach Jason Berg of Clovis West High told Tournament Director Robert Ciccone he would participate in the Hart girls’ soccer tournament only if Ciccone made sure his team faced good competition.
Ciccone granted Berg’s wish by awarding Clovis West with a first-round game against Buena, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.
The competition was too much for Clovis West, a highly regarded team from the Fresno area, which was beaten, 3-0, by the Bulldogs on Wednesday.
Natalie Sanderson had two goals and an assist for the Bulldogs (12-1-1), who play in the semifinals today against Peninsula, a 4-1 winner over Louisville.
“I had no idea who they were,” Sanderson said. “I just knew they were from Clovis. I didn’t even know where Clovis was. I thought the game was close in the first half. They really came out to win and played good defense. They were stuck on us like glue.”
Clovis West (9-2-5) played Buena tough for the 10 minutes, but after Sanderson netted her first goal the Bulldogs began to take charge.
Sanderson assisted on Ashleigh Garmon’s goal in the 40th minute and scored again in the 65th.
In other girls’ games in the Hart tournament:
Valencia 6, Chatsworth 0--The Vikings (12-1) came up with the biggest surprise of the tournament and advanced to the semifinals against Foothill League rival Hart (5-4-2).
Leah Shelton scored two goals.
The Chancellors (3-2-1) were coming off a 10-0 victory over Azusa earlier in the day.
