Police Investigating Explosion, Car Fire
A car parked at the Channel Islands Athletic Club burst into flames, and police were investigating a report of a man seen running from the fire, authorities said Wednesday.
The blaze engulfed a maroon 1997 Nissan Maxima that had been parked in the 2500 block of Bolker Drive about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to Port Hueneme police.
A witness described seeing a man running from the parking lot after hearing an explosion and seeing the car on fire. The man was last seen jumping a wall that leads to an adjacent parking lot at a local hotel.
Firefighters from the Construction Battalion Naval Base extinguished the flames. The car was destroyed, authorities said.
The car’s owner, Veronica Hernandez, had parked at the club before going to visit her brother, who lives across the street. She was unable to provide police with any reason why someone would torch her car.
