After months of technical problems and delays, the Police Department began issuing tickets instead of warnings last week from the city’s first red-light enforcement camera, officials said.

Motorists caught on film while running a red light at Alton Parkway and Muirlands Boulevard will now be issued $271 citations through the mail.

Police had been mailing warnings to violators in lieu of tickets since the camera was activated May 19.

What was scheduled to be a 30-day grace period was extended twice as police, the Department of Motor Vehicles and the courts smoothed out the kinks in their electronic system.

Despite the communication glitches, police have said they are pleased with the camera’s performance.

The device, which monitors three lanes of southbound traffic, has recorded 740 violations in the last three months.
