Hip-Hop Awards Show Halted as Fights Break Out

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Police had to cancel taping of a hip-hop TV awards show Tuesday night after fights broke out backstage and in the hall of the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, witnesses said.

The witnesses said police asked people to leave the auditorium about two hours into the taping of the annual Source magazine Hip-Hop Awards after scenery on the stage began to sway because of a backstage fight. The show was being taped to be broadcast on the UPN network Tuesday.

The fight backstage took place just after police broke up a fight in the auditorium.

The audience left in an orderly fashion, one witness said. There was no immediate word on whether the taping will be completed later.
