Girl, 9, Hit by Truck is Critically Hurt
A 9-year-old girl was in critical condition Monday after she ran between two buses stopped at a red light and hit the side of a moving flatbed truck, which dragged her a short distance, authorities said.
Sandra Berry of Ventura ran from her mother’s side across 4th Street in Oxnard about 1 p.m., according to police reports. One bus was behind the other at a traffic signal, and after Sandra darted between them, she ran directly into the side of the truck that was going straight at the intersection near Oxnard Boulevard, authorities said.
“He put on the brakes and tried to stop, but she got dragged underneath,” said Sgt. Lee Wilcox, watch commander at the Oxnard Police Department.
The truck driver was not charged, authorities said, although an investigation is continuing.
Sandra was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where she is in critical condition, according to hospital officials.
