Irvine planning commissioners sent designers of a new marquee for the renamed Verizon Wireless Amphitheater back to the drawing board last week for the third time.
At a meeting Thursday, the commission voted 3 to 0 to give Promotional Signs of Lake Forest one more crack at designing a 38-foot sign facing the southbound traffic on the San Diego Freeway.
The commission wants the sign, which will replace the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre sign, to prominently feature the city’s name and not merely advertise Verizon.
At the July 20 meeting, commissioners asked the designers to make several changes to the sign. Promotional Signs revised it to emphasize the name of the venue and added smaller signs between the support poles that would bear the city’s name and direct drivers to “Exit Irvine Center Drive.”
The commission is expected to consider another revised design at its Sept. 7 meeting.
