LAGUNA BEACH
The City Council has agreed to work with the YMCA to create a skateboard park, but denied a staff request to place it at the Big Bend area on Laguna Canyon Road, citing perilous driving conditions.
The council unanimously approved the concept of a YMCA-sponsored skate park at its Tuesday meeting.
Councilman Wayne L. Peterson said he will propose a skating zone at Bark Park on Laguna Canyon Road next month. The council will consider either moving the dog park to another area or splitting the park to accommodate the skating area.
City staff recommended the council allocate $75,000 in study, design and construction costs for a 21,000-square-foot facility that would accommodate up to 40 skaters. The YMCA agreed to provide liability coverage and operate the park.
For more than five years, city officials have tried to find an appropriate location for a skate park.
