COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES
Pac-10 favorite Washington will be without starting wide receiver Chris Juergens for the start of its fall training camp because of an ailing left knee.
Juergens could be redshirted for the season, Coach Rick Neuheisel said.
“His knee is aggravated by playing,” Neuheisel said. “But I think he’ll be able to play again. The question is, will that be . . . without discomfort? A year to rehabilitate and build the muscles will allow that.”
But Juergens, who caught 42 passes for 516 yards and one touchdown as a sophomore, hasn’t been ruled out this season.
He’s undergoing a series of injections to try to reduce inflammation. Further surgery is also an option.
Juergens injured the knee last season and underwent arthroscopic surgery in January. He began to feel better and performed well in spring training, but in June his knee began to swell.
Losing Juergens would hurt the Huskies’ Pac-10 championship chances. He is the team’s most experienced receiver and a big target at 6 feet 3 and 210 pounds.
