Airport Braces for Extra Traffic

Anticipating more private jet traffic because of the Democratic National Convention, Burbank Airport officials said Friday they are advising operators of older jets to abide by its nighttime noise curfew or face a fine.

The curfew restricts older private jets known as Stage II aircraft from landing or taking off between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., said Burbank Airport spokesman Victor Gill.

Gill said the airport issued the warning to the aircraft operators last month in anticipation of a larger-than-normal influx of corporate aircraft for the convention.

“We want the aircraft operators to be keenly aware of the sensitivity to noise during nighttime hours at Burbank Airport,” Gill said. “We also want our neighbors to know that if they hear more planes than usual, it’s a one-time event.”

Since June 1999, Burbank Airport has issued or assessed 19 fines totaling $10,000 to owners of private aircraft. Fines for each violation range from $500 to $1,000, Gill said.
