Nelson Advances in USTA Event

Lindsey Nelson of Orange pulled off the upset of the day Wednesday at the USTA Girls’ 16 Super Nationals in San Diego.

Nelson, who will be a freshman at Villa Park High in the fall, defeated fifth-seeded Eva Wang of Haverford, Pa., 6-1, 4-1 (ret.), in the round of 32. Wang retired in the second set because of a sore wrist.

Nelson will play Jamea Jackson of Bradenton, Fla., in today’s round of 16.

Corona del Mar sophomore Anne Yelsey fell into the back draw after losing to Tory Zawacki of Union City, N.J., 6-1, 6-2. Yelsey plays Lauren Perl of San Diego today.

GOLF

Daniel Kush of Tustin stretched his lead to three shots after the second round of an AJGA tournament at Kansas City, Mo. Kush, a junior at Newport Harbor High, shot two-over 72 at the Kansas City Country Club for a 141 total. Steven Bullock of Dove Canyon is seven shots back after a second-round 69.

WATER POLO

The SoCal 18-and-under girls’ team joined its two lower level teams in the semifinals of the National Junior Olympic water polo tournament at Katella. High.

SoCal advanced to today’s semifinals with an 11-8 overtime victory against Commerce. Foothill sophomores Brittany Hayes and Gabbie Domanic, who led the 16-and-under team into the semifinals, scored five goals each.

Foothill senior Vickie Brown scored four goals in an earlier 6-3 victory over Tualitin Hills (Ore.). Foothill sophomore Emily Fehr had nine saves in both games for SoCal.

The SoCal boys’ 18-and-under team dropped into the losers’ bracket on Tuesday, but stayed alive at Esperanza High with a 15-5 victory against Navy and a 13-5 victory against East Bay.

Newport didn’t fare as well in the same division, losing to Rose Bowl, 8-7, and La Morinda, 5-4.

DIVING

Olympic diver Jenny Keim of Miami was the top qualifier in the women’s 3-meter springboard preliminaries at the U.S. National Outdoor Championships in Mission Viejo.

Kellie Brennan of Huntington Beach, an Edison High graduate, also advanced to Sunday’s final by taking the final qualifying spot.

Cuban Rio Ramirez of Miami was the top qualifier in the men’s 10-meter platform competition.
