15 Acres Burned Near Conejo Grade
A fire scorched 15 acres on a rocky hillside overlooking the Conejo Grade on Wednesday afternoon, blanketing the heavily traveled Ventura Freeway with ash.
The blaze began about 2 p.m. on Conejo Mountain at the end of Pancho Road, about half a mile from Camarillo Springs Mobile Home Park. No homes were threatened during the two-hour fire, authorities said.
Fire officials considered using air tankers to fight the flames, which spread fast because of dry conditions and 10 mph winds, said Joe Luna, a spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department. But officials decided against the planes after firefighters on the ground gained control of the fire with the help of two water-dropping helicopters.
At the fire’s peak, more than 60 firefighters battled the blaze.
The cause is under investigation.
