Strawberry Will Have Cancer Surgery Again
Darryl Strawberry has a new cancerous tumor in his abdomen and most likely will have surgery next week.
The agent for Strawberry--who last played for the New York Yankees--said Friday the tumor is near the section of colon that was operated on in 1998.
Eric Grossman said a letter he received from Dr. Jonathan LaPook of Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York said tests earlier in the week “strongly indicated” a recurrence of cancer.
“Yes, it is back,” the agent said.
Strawberry had surgery at Columbia Presbyterian after being diagnosed with the cancer that sidelined him just before the Yankees’ World Series title run two years ago.

Dave Martinez was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays from the Texas Rangers, tying a major league record by joining his fourth team in a season. Martinez was acquired by Texas from the Chicago Cubs in June, and started the season with Tampa Bay. Toronto acquired the outfielder for a player to be named later. The last player to play for four teams was Dave Kingman, who played with the Mets, Padres, Angels and Yankees in 1977. Toronto also sent pitcher Roy Halladay to triple-A Syracuse to make room on its roster for recently acquired Steve Trachsel. . . . Angered by the unauthorized use of his name on a gambling Web site, Reggie Jackson said he has cut his ties to the operation. . . . The players’ association filed a grievance to block the Kansas City Royals’ suspension of Carlos Beltran, last year’s American League rookie of the year. Beltran was suspended without pay for refusing to report to the team’s Florida training complex for rehabilitation. . . . Orlando Hernandez will come off the disabled list to start Sunday for the New York Yankees. Hernandez (8-7) has been sidelined since July 14 because of right elbow discomfort and mild back spasms. The Yankees also put reliever Ramiro Mendoza on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his right shoulder. Reliever Allen Watson was activated from the DL to take his spot on the roster. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies acquired shortstop Desi Relaford from the San Diego Padres. The Padres had claimed Relaford off waivers. The Phillies then pulled him back and worked out a deal with San Diego for a player to be named. The Phillies also activated catcher Mike Lieberthal off the 15-day disabled list. . . . Right-hander Jack Armstrong, who started the 1990 All-Star game while playing for the Cincinnati Reds, agreed to a minor league contract with the Florida Marlins. . . . Rookie Russell Branyan, who had 13 home runs in 122 at-bats but was hitting only .230, was sent back to triple-A Buffalo by the Cleveland Indians. . . . Pitching coach Don Gullett is expected to rejoin the Cincinnati Reds in a few days after doctors gave him a clean bill of health following tests on his heart.
