Kim Wins Twice to Reach U.S. Girls’ Amateur Final

Ina Kim of Encino, beating a national champion for the second consecutive day, won two matches Friday and reached the final of the 52nd U.S. Girls’ Junior Amateur Championship at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club at North Plains, Ore.

Kim won three of the last four holes in the semifinals to defeat Violeta Retamoza, the Mexican girls’ champion, 3 and 2. On Thursday, Kim beat Aree Wongluekiet, the defending U.S. champion.

“I never would have guessed that I’d be in the final,” said Kim a senior at Harvard-Westlake High. “I’m still really confident, but I keep telling myself to be confident.”

In the quarterfinals, Kim built a 4-up lead through 10 holes and downed Candy Herrera of Apple Valley, 4 and 2.

Kim will play Lisa Ferrero of Lodi in the final today at 10:30 a.m. Ferrero defeated Mallory Code of Tampa, Fla., 2 up, in the quarterfinals, and beat Angela Won of Irvine, 4 and 2, in the semifinals.

Ferrero has not trailed since the 13th hole in the first round of match play.

Both finalists earned exemptions for the U.S. Women’s Amateur next week at Waverly Country Club in Portland.

Tim Hogarth of Northridge stumbled to a five-over-par 76 and finished in a tie for fourth in the 34th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Hogarth shot 75-67-72-76--290. Winner Billy Harvey of the Southern Nevada Golf Assn. finished at 74-67-74-72--287.

Hogarth’s team from the Public Links Golf Assn. of Southern California, finished third at 145-139-147-150--581.

The Northern California Orange team, comprised of brothers Andy, Scott and Todd Miller, won the title at 146-140-148-143--577. The are sons of Johnny Miller, 1973 U.S. Open champion.

Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys, playing for the Southern California Golf Assn. Gold team that tied for fifth at 146-150-147-145--588, shot 76-78-70-71--295.

* Mike Pringle, from Kennedy High, tied a 45-year-old team record by rushing for four touchdowns in the Montreal Alouettes’ 62-7 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders in a Canadian Football League game Thursday night at Montreal.
