Howard Young; Longtime County Resident

Longtime Ventura County resident Howard Young, a former salesman and county employee, died Wednesday at a Ventura convalescent hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 92.

He was born July 11, 1908, in Nebraska. The next year his family moved to Bardsdale, near Fillmore. He had been a Ventura resident since 1909.

Young worked for Bank of America from 1935 to 1937. After that, he worked for the Ventura County Welfare Department and the county auditor’s office.

During World War II, Young was a supervisor of markings at the Construction Battalion Center at Port Hueneme naval base.

After the war, he became a self-employed insurance agent. He was active in the Boy Scouts, the YMCA, the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Ventura Downtown Kiwanis Club. He was also a charter member of the Ventura County Camera Club, the YMCA’s Men’s Club and Los Padres Ski Club. For 12 years, he was the commercial supervisor at the Ventura County Fair.

Young was an avid yachtsman and sailboat racer and a lifetime member of the Ventura Yacht Club. He spent many years as a salesman with Yachtsman Inc. and Far West Yachts of Ventura.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia, sons Stephen of Layton, Utah, and John of Dallas, Ore., and one granddaughter.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Services will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
