Getting Gnarly for Sake of Environment

More than $200,000 was raised at the Waterman’s Ball on Friday to benefit environmental groups. The Surf Industry Manufacturers Assn.’s sold-out event, at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Dana Point, attracted pro surfers and 1,000 supporters.
Beneficiaries of the ball included American Oceans Campaign, Surfrider Foundation, Ocean Institute, Hidden Harbor Marine Environmental Project (Turtle Hospital), Heal the Bay and the Alaska Wilderness Project.
h Pioneering wetsuit-maker Jack O’Neill, who wasn’t able
to attend because of an illness, received the Achievement Award. Susan Crank and Tom Knapp shared Environmentalists of the Year honors. Surfing America champions Keala Kennelly of Hawaii and Shea Lopez of San Clemente were named Surfers of the Year.
